NetbookTech: Instructions for updating the Acer Aspire One BIOS

  • Maka · 1 year ago
    Hi,

I did exactly as you instructed but there was no difference with my fan. Please, do you know what might be the reason
  • Steve · 1 year ago
Thanks for this very clear guide. It made it easy.

I'm looking to buy the Aspire One... did the BIOS update fix the noisy fan issue?
  • krunker · 12 months ago
I know several people claim the BIOS update did nothing for their Aspire One. However (maybe it's just my head here), I could swear the fan appears to be responding now to the temperature of the netbook. If it isn't working for you, you could still install the 3rd party fan control application for Windows.
  • Geeps · 10 months ago
apparently the new bios (3309) addresses the fan issue among other things, u might wanna check it out, it just came out yesterday

this sounds GREAT! and as much as i'd *love* to do this, i have one weeeee little problem: between steps 9 and 10, it asks me for my usr password.... which i have (oh yes, you guessed it) forgotten. *sigh*
anyone know of a bypass password? it won't take the root password either. i know it's a bit off subject but ANY help would be greatly appreciated. ^^

In Step 9, hit F12 instead of F2, arrow down to the USB, and press Enter. No need to change the permanent settings!

Thanks for a really nice presentation!!

P.S. Animanikati with the lost password: try THIS: http://macles.blogspot.com/2008/08/acer-aspire-...

On Step 13, how long did it take for the .bat command to complete?

I'm trying to update to 3309. I've been waiting for one hour and it's still hanging. After 45 minutes, I've hit return once without any response. The power is plugged in.
  • Ron · 9 months ago
Got it resolved. After waiting almost 2 hours, I finally powered it down, turn it on, hit <F2> and found that the version was still on the old version. The time kept resetting to the wrong time even after re-saving. After saving the bios settings, I saved & exited, but it would no longer boot. Power off and on, and get just a blank, black screen. Following these instructions in this link below and was able to recover, but the version kept at the old version.

At least it's booting up again.
  • krunker · 9 months ago
I recently updated the BIOS to 3309 and if I remember correctly it only took me a minute or two max for the flash process to finish. Glad that you at least got it booting again - hopefully you'll be able to successfully flash the unit this time. BTW - you probably did this but just in case you didn't - make sure to keep the system connected to AC power.

  • prasanna · 9 months ago
....great work man...i updated to 3309 and its wonderful/ thanks a lot.....
  • Xavi · 8 months ago
Step 9 could be substitute for pressing F12.
    Good job.
  • xepe71 · 8 months ago
Fantastic. It works and it's so easy to upgrade! Thank you. As per today (march 09) we are on version 3309. Also, in order to boot from a USB just press F12 instead of F2 and you'll be directed to the USB.

Bought a refurbished model that had a return slip that said it had been returned as it would not turn on. Plugged it in and all looked OK reporting 100% battery charge. But when mains was turned off it just died. Found various sites and this looked easiest to follow. Flashed the BIOS from 3301 to 3309 following these excellent instructions. After a couple of reboots and second thoughts (as whilst BIOS had changed battery still reported 100% and problem remained), system sorted itself out and battery is charging up from 0% and it remains on when unplugged!

    Many thanks

This is my fifth PC in about as many weeks. What I saved in money, I've spent in lost production attempting to get the fucking piece of shit to work.

What a waste of time and money.

I did the bios update (3309) and now my battery that would not charge is charging. Thank you! Your directions were wonderful. I got nowhere with Acer other than they were going to send me a new battery, but I don't think that would have been a longterm solution.
  • KevinT · 4 months ago
I also did the 3309 bios update and it worked a dream Thanks so much. The battery started to charge within 5 minutes after rebooting. Your step by step guide made it so easy. Many many thanks.

You’re going to change the boot order back to the way it was. It might already be in the proper boot order but it’s a good thing to check anyhow. Make sure the first boot option is the hard drive (unless of course you always want the netbook to check the USB flash drive first).
  • Airbrakes · 1 month ago
Thanks for the tips. I have tried this on my laptop it works their as well but the options were a bit changed.

    Thanks

I find your blog while searching for some help. I was messing around with the Bios and I moved the Flash boot to the top and save the changes before going through the process you mentioned. Now I only have a black screen when i power up. Any ideas? Desperate!!!!

Thanks for this detailed guide. I'm hearing that many have had issues with the bios settings on the Acer Aspire one. a shame Acer coulldn't have got a handle on this before releasing the netbook.
