NetbookTech: Guide to installing OS X on Lenovo IdeaPad S10

  • johnnny · 1 year ago
Is there a way to get the ethernet to work and the sound to work? Any idea? I been playing around this thing for days now.
Thank you for the guide i was able to get this far. =)
  • krunker · 1 year ago
Unfortunately I haven't had time to play with the system more since I'm trying a couple of other operating systems on it right now. I'll try and take a look at it in a few weeks. Let us know if you find an answer though!!
  • Bruno Abreu · 11 months ago
Yes there is, the audieee app is the solution, you just need a mac os x DVD in order to install the developer tools. Everything should works fine after that, i put, for example, the fred voice on my s10
  • digitalkid · 11 months ago
First off, Many thanks to Flung for this article!
For those who are still trying to resolve the sound issues, I found this:

    http://ipis-osx.wikidot.com/forum/t-101853/audi...

which worked fine on my S10. I also posted my experience installing OS X from an external USB hard drive as opposed to an External DVD on my blog here:

    http://blog.954network.com/2008/12/10/install-m...
  • ballistik · 10 months ago
I installed Audieee and developer tools... still no sound ;-(
  • Barcelona hostels · 1 month ago
It’s still a work in progress but for those of you that absolutely must have OS X on their IdeaPad S10, it’s definitely possible - though with some caveats for now. I’m sure over time, developers out there will find solutions for the problems listed here.

    Thanks

    is the bluetooth does work?
  • krunker · 1 year ago
I was unable to test Bluetooth since the model I have doesn't include Bluetooth.
  • Ronald Q. Mejorada · 1 year ago
    yes it works...
    am using bluetooth speaker...

    gr8 job m8...
I think am gonna buy this netbook...instead of MSI Wind U100.
But 3-Cell battery ... hope there will be the 6 or 9-Cell soon.
So as per your review, sound and LAN still not working...
    But Wifi is working...that's good.
If you can get built-in bluetooth to work, tahn you can use it as A2DP.
  • krunker · 1 year ago
Still working on the overall review of the netbook. There's definitely a lot to like with the IdeaPad S10. One note though - the MSI Wind does have a nicer keyboard - just ever so slightly though. The 3 cell battery is also a bit of a downer - I was using the netbook during Jury Duty this morning and the battery was draining fairly quickly - definitely wish I had a 6 cell on hand.

Hey, am Lenovo ideapad owner with Leopard in it and the
"Touch-pad does (not) recognize button presses on the touch-pad itself"
    it works in my ideapad...
btw iused the kalyway 10.5.2 ...
  • krunker · 1 year ago
Oh? I'll have to try Kalyway one of these days then! It wouldn't work for me using the distro I had but I could have screwed something up for all I know.
  • livingfrisbee · 12 months ago
How were you able to get it to see the external DVD? Mine just dumps out to a black screen with a flashing cursor and does nothing until I unplug the drive.
  • roberto · 1 year ago
I have the same kind of deal with the setup. The four things that don't work for me is lan, no sound what so ever, no adjustment of fan speed (so need to reboot once, so the fan can kick in, although this worked when I used kalyway) and screen brightness. Sleep works, express card works with my option att card, wifi works, touchpad with the clickers work (i haven't been able to get scrolling yet though) and it gets about 2:30-3 hrs of battery life. Bluetooth works if i put in a usb bluetooth adapter since this model does not have bluetooth.
Sleep works with either closing the screen or doing it manually through the menus. And it is fast to go into or come out of sleep.
  • roberto · 1 year ago
This helped after the 10.5.5 setup which got me the sleep working.

Thanks for the linky. I ran across it when i was trying this out but never got it to work for me - but I'll definitely try again in a bit. I need to get a hold of another 2.5 inch hdd to do these tests. I'm currently working on a couple of other OS installs on the S10 - just to see what it'll be like on this netbook.

After I updated the machine and restarted, there was display. Just a completely black screen. Did anyone run into this problem?

Does the touchpad support 2 finger scrolling?
  • Techkandai · 1 year ago
Hi - Can you check if the "sound drivers" for MSI Wind works for Lenovo S10 as well?
    http://rapidshare.com/files/156863271/MSIWindDr...
  • joeblough · 1 year ago
the AppleAzalia hack plus Audeee does work on the s10. you need to install CHUD from the developer tools though.

touchpad does not support 2 finger scrolling without some hacks. i have not tried this, because the reports are that the trackpad is too jumpy when you load whatever kexts are necessary to make the 2-finger scroll work.
  • Josh · 1 year ago
On the step that says, "cd /Volumes/<name of your disk volume>/var/db”

I don't understand what to put in for the name of your disk volume. Where did you get S10? I called my partition macosx and I tried to put that in that area but it didn't work. What do I put in there?
  • nasser · 1 year ago
I am stuck here to and I have tried everything, some one please help us.
  • krunker · 1 year ago
When I first created my partitions (a single one for the entire drive), I named the drive "s10" which is why it's listed here as such. You should be able to just do a directory listing to see what drives are listed under volumes
  • nasser · 1 year ago
ok I named mine s10 and it worked. so that makes me happy. THANKS !!
  • Eric · 11 months ago
Thank you for this guide. I picked up a S10 yesterday and other then the keyboard, I really like it. I wanted to share my experience getting Leopard installed:

    1. I swapped out the 80GB drive for a larger one from WD and added a 2GB dimm*
    2. After partitioning the drive as GUID and 1 partition, the installed crashed hard. There was a kernel panic and everything stopped. I don't know, but rebooting let me continue no problem.
    3. Sound does indeed work with Aduieee and the Azalia pkg
    4. Sleep works via the apple menu or closing the lid. I used the Darwin packages. Search for clamshell.kext (i can post the URL later this evening)
    5. webcam doesn't seem to work in photobooth, but just fine in ichat. Weird...

So, basically i have a $400 mac netbook. I'm not displeased in the least, though I do miss scrolling on the track pad...

*The BIOS shows me 2GB of RAM as would be expected since 512 is soldered on the MB to begin with. However, in Leopard, I show 2.5GB of available RAM
  • Eric · 11 months ago
http://superhai.com/darwin.html - Link for the sleep and clamshell. You need both EHCISleepEnabler and Clamshell
  • krunker · 11 months ago
Hey Eric - thanks for the posting. Glad the guide helped you out. i really need to sit down and try this install again - since it's been several weeks since I last tried. (the system is running Windows 7 right now).

If I buy a Lenovo Netbook. I mange to get a copy of MSIWindOSX86.ISO file.

I don't have a external dvd for the netbook.

Is there a way I can use my portable usb external hd 80 to boot from the iso and
install it instead of burn the iso to dvd and use a external dvd burner ?

I had to use the kexts from this 10.5.6 Upgrade Pack v2: http://www.sendspace.com/file/8qk465

I just installed the keyboard and trackpad drivers. See this thread for more info, http://forums.msiwind.net/mac/msiwindowsx86-iso...

Great! I finally got my sound to work, which is the last thing I had to "fix"... I followed every single step or install you could think of on this and 3 other sites, and the thing that finally helped me was upgrading to 10.5.5 (not 5.6) and doing the Azalea/Audieee fix. When I upgraded to 10.5.6 (combo update) the first go 'round my whole keyboard and mouse froze, so i re-installed MSIWind dvd and now with the 10.5.5 update everything works. has anyone had success with the 10.5.6 update?

For those of you who haven't found the fix for the fan speed issue you can thank Fabzo over at s10lenovo.com for figuring it out. Download this http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8K1FRQH2 kext. I just installed it with the kexthelper and it started working instantly.

Also a tip for those who needs ethernet, the 10/100 usb network adapter that apple sells for the Macbook Air is only 29 bucks and works fine.

It is a very cool explanation and thank you for your kindness. I have a question about normal usability of S10 + MSWINDOSX86. How fast booting speed is? And do you feel any frustration for web browsing and email usage compare to normal OSX specifically about speed?
  • ionman · 9 months ago
Thank you so much for this tutorial, and all of the links that everyone has posted. I have my S10 running OS X (retail DVD) almost 100% now. There are a few things that I would still like to be able to fix, if possible.

    - Sleep........I installed the kexts linked to above, and the machine no longer hangs when trying to sleep, but it immediately powers back on. Anyone else seen that?
    - Dual displays.........I can setup multiple displays just fine, but if I hit Fn+F3 the display goes wacky. I then have to reboot the machine.

    Thanks again!

    what went wrong?

  • kitch · 8 months ago
I put together a bunch of info recently on how to get this done using Retail DVD. It's working flawlessly now.

    Fans\Speedstep\Audio\wifi\webcam all working

    No LAN
    No Mic

A lot of this is based on the hard work from the DellEFI folks, but its working great on our S10s also.

I got the MSIWIndowsx86.ISO image bootable by Mounting it first in MAC or Hackintosh then I inserted a DVD< once is mounted go to Applications>Disk Utilities>Restore. In source Drop the Mac OS Install DVD Slipstream and Destination drop the DVD then click Burn and after that the computer surely will boot from the DVD< i wrote this because the image WAS NOT BOOTING, Thank you very much for helping me out
  • OSXUser · 8 months ago
    Hi,

first, I have a retail version. After I have tried the iso I got my Lenovo running. Ok the hardware doesn't fully work, but this isn't my problem. I can only boot with the DVD inserted. Thus I assume the bootloader isnt installed correctly.

Sympthoms: The welcome wizard didn't came up. I was forwarded directly into the installed OSX (admin).
I have simply touched the .AppleSetupDone, because the file system was mounted rw.

I tried to fix the bootloader with the OSx86 tools to create a bootable flash disk, because I was not able to do the same on
the active OSX partition. I miss the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist on that flashdisk, as the boot messages does tell me.

First question: The file on my Mac OS X (PPC) looks very simple, but I assume it points to the mach_kernel on the same partition. How do I tweak that on my flash disk to point to my disk0s3 partition and the kernel at it ?

Second question: The OSx86Tools finds a partition disk0s1 - the first partition to be used. Have I use that partition ?

Third question: Prior I have installed (factory) the Suse Linux Enterprise desktop with two partitions. I have shrinked the /home partition to get space for OSX and formatted it to FAT32 to identify it at installation. Given that I have disk0s3 for my
OSX installation. Are all issues clarified when the above questions are answered ?

Beside all the questions - nice work !

    Thanks
  • Kim · 8 months ago
I need some help, and i was wondering if any of you had experienced a similar problem. I have an S10 that dual boots in XP and Tiger. The other night i shut it down and in the morning it would not power up. The only light that even comes on is the battery charging light when the AC adaptor is plugged in.

Of course, lenovo won't touch it for warranty work because i upgraded the hard drive to a 320 GB. Has anyone else heard of these laptops having this problem? I don't think it has anything to do with the OS X hack, but i'm open to any suggestions.

Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. Unfortunately, whenever i try to boot from DVD drive it starts the windows. Can you please help? Right now I am running Windows Vista. Thank you.
  • krunker · 4 months ago
@Henry - did you change the boot order within the BIOS to boot from your DVD drive instead? That's probably what's happening and why you're booting from your Windows boot drive instead of the DVD.

Perhaps someone can help me with the issue I am having? I have loaded up the S10 with 10.5.4 and update to 10.5.5 or 10.5.6 I can not get Kext Helper to work correctly. Every time I run the software after about 15 sec. it freezes and shutdown the application. I also had the same error show when I tried Kext Helper in 10.5.4.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hello Guyz

Thanks for such a wonderfull article……. Till now I done a lot things with my S10 to give it ‘Savvy’ look….. First I disassemble my whole laptop…. painted all white parts like palm rest, LCD bezel in matte black colour…….. and then I painted the blue face plate with black also but did some stencil work for guess what…. Apple logo………..

Then followed this guide to install MSIWINDX86 distro…. Everything is working great…… Sound is fixed by Voodoo kext, wifi by bcm enabler, track pad also recognise taps, web cam working neatly, sleep is working….

Windows XP intact and dual booting. Recovery partiotion is intact……. (Just used 30 GB D: partition)

Just still having problems with Ethernet and Fan….
Hoping in future some body will provide a distro for S10 specifically….

    Thanks Again………..

when your in disk utility, go to the "erase" tab and you will format the drive, and under the type of for mat that you choose you can type a name for the partition, you have to type it in the box, then click "erase" below the box
